CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Bible Bible includes character studies and events in the lives of Moses, Joshua, Caleb, Miriam, Rahab, the Judges including: Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, and Samson, and the Life of Christ. Bible memory is a part of our weekly lessons.  We memorize one or two verses each week.  We memorize the following: Psalms 98, Psalm 121, Proverbs 3:1-6, Philippians 4:4-9, I John 4:7-10, and the school theme verse.

Reading Reading is a phonics-based program. We review the phonics charts learned in first grade and continue learning other phonetic rules that aid in reading fluency, decoding, expression and comprehension. Novels are introduced.  We have both A.M. and P.M. reading groups each day.  Also included in our program is Accelerated Reading. This program allows each student to advance to different individual levels of proficiency and comprehension through silent reading and taking A.R. tests.

Phonics Our phonics program is based on the systematic review and mastery of special sounds and phonetic rules.  We review all 132 special sounds.  We learn how to apply these special sounds and phonetic rules, to write spelling words, to read, to write sentences, to learn other language concepts and to build comprehension.  Each student is tested each week over special sounds and language rules.  The test includes a written and an oral section.

Language Basic sentence structure is taught and Creative Writing is introduced.  We work on other concepts such as: words in ABC order, syllables, accented syllables, capitalizing the first word in a sentence, days of the week, months of the year, special holidays, the word “I,” and names of people; we also learn suffixes and prefixes, rhyming words, opposite words, contractions, singular and plural words.

Spelling A new spelling list is introduced every Friday.  This allows students and parents to begin practicing on new spelling words over the weekend.  Spelling tests are given on Fridays.  Students learn and master special sounds at the top of each new spelling list each week.  Beginning second semester students are introduced to three new vocabulary words each week.

Math Students need to have a working knowledge of addition and subtraction facts, skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s and 25’s, identifying name and value of coins, (a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter) and telling time.  We learn how to solve basic story problems, the place value of digits and how to carry digits to the 10’s, 100’s and 1,000’s, how to borrow from the 10’s 100’s and 1000’s and how to read a thermometer. By the end of the year students should have mastered addition and subtraction facts, telling time, solving basic story problems, reading a thermometer, carrying and borrowing.

Handwriting The student is introduced to cursive handwriting.  The student learns the correct formation of each letter in the alphabet. The student practices and applies correct formation of writing words, sentences and copying short poems in cursive handwriting.  Tests are given each week.

Health We study Health during the 1st quarter.  Units of study include: your health; good eating, sleeping, and exercise habits; your manners; being polite, kind, cheerful; respecting authority and property, and others.

Science We study science during the 3rd and 4th quarters.  The student is introduced to many topics including: the plant world, weather, energy, force, friction, stars and plants, how the body works and the animal world.

History We study U.S. History during the 2nd quarter.  The student is introduced to the fifty states and the U.S. presidents.  We learn about the early years of our country--the Pilgrims, the Indians, and what it was like to be taught in a one-room schoolhouse.  We learn patriotic songs and the stories behind them.

HOMEWORK FOLDER

Homework folders are sent home daily.  This folder contains spelling and reading homework, the Responsibility and Reward Chart, graded papers, tests and a weekly newsletter. The student’s reading book and assignment are put in the folder.  A reading assignment sheet is taped on the pocket inside the folder.  Reading homework is assigned each day, except Wednesdays, and should take about 15 minutes each day.  The student reads the assignment two times.  The 1st time the student is to read it silently.  The 2nd time the student reads it out loud to an adult.  The homework assignment needs to be signed by the adult who has listened to the student read.

A Responsibility and Reward Chart is taped inside the student’s homework folder.  The purpose for the chart is to provide daily communication with the parents, teacher, and the child about the student’s responsibilities and behavior in the classroom.  Parents may use the folder as a means of communication with the teacher.  It is checked each day for any notes that may have been sent to school.

BEHAVIOR PLAN

The classroom discipline technique is based on a Responsibility and Reward Chart, providing the parents, student and teacher with an accurate record of the child’s responsibility and behavior each week.

The Responsibility and Reward Chart is taped inside the student’s homework folder.  This keeps lines of communication open and provides assessment of the child’s obedience and responsibility.  This is a proven way to hold the child personally responsible for his or her actions.

All warnings are recorded.  The five areas of warning are:

DO: Disobedience--not obeying right away with a cheerful heart

DR: Disrespect--to authority, property, and/or peers

T:    Talking--without permission or in a disruptive manner

P:    Playing--during instructional time, and/or playing during seatwork

O:    Out of Seat--without permission

The system for recording warnings on the R&R Chart is as follows:

1 Warning- no mark is recorded on the R&R Chart

2 Warnings- in any area are recorded on the R&R Chart

3 Warnings- in any area are recorded on the R&R Chart

Notification by note to the parents is given.

4 Warnings- in any area are recorded on the R&R Chart

Notification by phone is given or a visit with the principal.

If the student receives only one warning for the day on the warning pad, it is not  recorded on the R&R Chart, and the child receives two stickers for that day.  She/he will receive a sticker after lunch and then receive their second sticker at the end of the day.  Bonus stickers can be earned for displays of Christ-like character. (Phil. 2:5, Eph. 4:32, Prov. 27:2)

Special awards are given out each Friday for eight or more stickers received on the Responsibility and Reward Chart.  Rewards may include, but are not limited to: a special award from the instructor’s Treasure Chest, an extra recess, and extra art project, name on the “Super Star” bulletin board for special recognition, or any other awards that the instructor may choose for that week.
