Bible Bible includes
character studies and events in the lives of Moses, Joshua, Caleb, Miriam,
Rahab, the Judges including: Othniel, Ehud, Deborah, Gideon, and Samson, and
the Life of Christ. Bible memory is a part of our weekly lessons. We memorize one or two verses each
week. We memorize the following: Psalms
98, Psalm 121, Proverbs 3:1-6, Philippians 4:4-9, I John 4:7-10, and the school
theme verse.
Reading Reading is a phonics-based
program. We review the phonics charts learned in first grade and continue
learning other phonetic rules that aid in reading fluency, decoding, expression
and comprehension. Novels are introduced. We have both A.M. and P.M. reading groups each day. Also included in our program is Accelerated
Reading. This program allows each student to advance to different individual
levels of proficiency and comprehension through silent reading and taking A.R.
tests.
Phonics Our phonics program is based
on the systematic review and mastery of special sounds and phonetic rules. We review all 132 special sounds. We learn how to apply these special
sounds and phonetic rules, to write spelling words, to read, to write
sentences, to learn other language concepts and to build comprehension. Each student is tested each week over
special sounds and language rules. The test includes a written and an oral section.
Language Basic sentence structure is
taught and Creative Writing is introduced. We work on other concepts such as: words in ABC order,
syllables, accented syllables, capitalizing the first word in a sentence, days
of the week, months of the year, special holidays, the word “I,” and names of
people; we also learn suffixes and prefixes, rhyming words, opposite words,
contractions, singular and plural words.
Spelling A new spelling list is
introduced every Friday. This
allows students and parents to begin practicing on new spelling words over the
weekend. Spelling tests are given
on Fridays. Students learn and
master special sounds at the top of each new spelling list each week. Beginning second semester students are
introduced to three new vocabulary words each week.
Math Students need to have a working knowledge of
addition and subtraction facts, skip counting by 2’s, 3’s, 5’s, 10’s and 25’s,
identifying name and value of coins, (a penny, nickel, dime, and quarter) and
telling time. We learn how to
solve basic story problems, the place value of digits and how to carry digits
to the 10’s, 100’s and 1,000’s, how to borrow from the 10’s 100’s and 1000’s
and how to read a thermometer. By the end of the year students should have
mastered addition and subtraction facts, telling time, solving basic story
problems, reading a thermometer, carrying and borrowing.
Handwriting The student is introduced to
cursive handwriting. The student
learns the correct formation of each letter in the alphabet. The student
practices and applies correct formation of writing words, sentences and copying
short poems in cursive handwriting. Tests are given each week.
