CENTRAL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – HUTCHINSON, KS
Grade Level:  Fourth
Instructor Name:  Mrs. LaVerna Richert
School Year:  2008-2009
Curriculum:  A Beka & Bob Jones – Reading

CURRICULUM OVERVIEW:

Bible – Bible study includes events concerning Jesus’ boyhood, ministry, crucifixion and resurrection, the life of the Apostle Paul and Old Testament characters: Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph.  Students will memorize the following passages: school theme verse, A-Z verses, I Cor. 13:1-8a, Phil. 4:4-9, Luke 2:8-16 and John 1:1-14.  Tests on lessons and verses for the week will be on Fridays.

Reading  -  Students read the stories in a basic reading text silently or orally and answer questions in the workbook.  A novel is read during the second semester.  Students read and report on one library book per month.  Reports will vary – oral, written or Accelerated Reading tests.  Book-It program will be used to encourage reading.

Math – Basic math facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are reviewed.  By the end of the year students should be able to master the following math skills: place-value through millions, multi-step story problems, English and metric measures, addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions, place-value of decimals through thousandths, pictographs, bar graphs and line graphs, geometric shapes and figures, and perimeter and area of a polygon.

Written and oral drills are conducted in the classroom.  Daily assignments, speed drills, quizzes and tests are assigned.

Language - The goal in Language is to teach students to express themselves clearly and creatively.  Students work on written compositions, using the dictionary and encyclopedia, punctuation rules, identifying parts of speech and correct word usage.  There are daily assignments and written tests after each unit.

Spelling – A new spelling list is introduced every Thursday.  Tests on the list including the vocabulary words are on Wednesdays.  Students are encouraged to review words as often as needed.

Science – Units of study in science include insects, plants, birds, matter, energy, geology, oceanography and astronomy.  Students take notes on these units and have quizzes and tests.  There are assigned experiments.  Students are required to write a short research paper on an assigned bird.

History – Students study United States history.  They learn to locate all fifty sates and know their capitals. Students design a model of an Indian home.  Quizzes and tests are given.  During the third quarter students study Kansas history.  Students prepare a poster display about a Kansas symbol, person or product.

Health – Students learn about bones, muscles, lungs, teeth, skin and the importance of exercise, good eating habits and good grooming.  Healthy relationships with God and others are encouraged.  Quizzes and tests are required.

  1. Student Planners

Students will write their daily assignments in the planner.  Any assignment not done at the end of the day will be homework.  These should be completed and turned in the next morning.  Parents should check planners and initial them on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

  1. Homework

Set aside about 40 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday as a study time.  Determine what time works best for your family and stick to that schedule as much as possible.  Be sure to provide a quiet place for study.  During this time look at your child’s papers, review the memory verse, study spelling words as needed, complete any unfinished assignments, review notes and read a good library book.  Some students may need a longer session, but everyone should spend at least 40 minutes.  Your signature in the planner tells me that your child has completed the assigned study session.

  1. Grades

All grades will be reported in percentages per school policy.  Graded quizzes and tests will be sent home with students.  Parents should sign and send these back with the student the following day.

  1. Classroom behavior

Students are expected to be obedient, listen carefully to instruction, and respect others and their property.  Consequences for misbehavior may include an oral or written apology, missing recess, lunch seating away from classmates or extra assignments.  Problems will be discussed with parents and administrators as needed.  Occasional rewards will be given to students who faithfully complete their homework, return tests on time and exhibit appropriate behavior.
