CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Bible Bible study includes an overview of both the Old and New
Testaments. It starts with the
major events in Genesis, the beginning of the nation of Israel, and prophecy
concerning the birth of Jesus. It
continues with the life of Christ, the early church, and a brief look at
prophecy in Revelation. Memory work includes the following passages:
Philippians 2:3-11; Proverbs 3:1-13; Luke 2:1-20; Romans 3:23, 6:23, 5:8,
10:9-10; I Timothy 2:3-6; John 14:1-7; I Thessalonians 4:13-18. Tests on lessons and verses for the
week are on Friday.
Spelling A new spelling list is introduced every Thursday. Mastery of this list includes correct
spelling of words, sentence usage, and vocabulary definitions. Tests are on Wednesday.
Language The goal in language is for
the students to express themselves clearly both in written and verbal
communication. Students are
expected to express themselves in sentences, paragraphs, and compositions,
using correct capitalization and punctuation. They are expected to recognize and use correctly the eight
basic parts of speech. Diagramming
sentences is a part of this instruction. Students learn and use the writing process with explanatory and
narrative paragraphs, research papers, and book reports. A part of this instruction includes
using the library to research information in encyclopedias and on the internet.
Math Students
are expected to know their basic math facts. A short amount of time is spent reviewing measures and
fractions before going on to decimals and percent. These skills are applied to
solving story problems, expressing information in graphs, and reading scale
drawings. Geometry concepts and an
introduction to algebra are also covered.
Reading The
basic reading text covers a variety of genres and includes high interest,
quality literature. In addition to
the basic text and corresponding workbook, comprehension exercises and
vocabulary study are done each week. Several novels are also read. Students also have the opportunity to participate in Book It.
Social
Studies Students focus on the Western Hemisphere, known as the New World. They study the geography, history, and
economy of Canada, the United States, Central America, the West Indies, and
South America. They use a map
skill book in addition to the basic text to learn landforms, bodies of water,
and countries. During the study of
the United States, they learn the states and capitals. Along with the basic studies, students
learn to interpret timelines, maps, and graphs.
Science Students focus on God’s world and His provision for
us. Units of study include plants,
invertebrates, the earth, the universe, space, and chemistry. These units are studied during the
first three quarters of the year.
Health The study of safety and
first aid, growth and fitness, and a healthy mind and body are covered during
the fourth nine weeks.
PLANNERS, HOMEWORK, AND FOLDERS
Each student is expected to use a binder with
dividers to keep work organized. A
part of this organization is the expectation that students write daily
assignments in their planners and check off work as it is finished. It is the student’s responsibility to
finish daily work, study for quizzes and tests, and work on projects as
directed by the teacher. Homework should
be kept in the homework folder in the binder and turned in. Work returned is placed either in the
appropriate division of the binder or in a take-home folder. Material in the take-home folder should
be cleaned out and left at home.
BEHAVIOR PLAN
Students are expected to be obedient, to listen
carefully, and to respect others and their property. Discipline measures may include apologies, writing a
discipline plan, and informing parents of any problems. Further consequences may come in the
form of a referral to the administrator.
