Overview:
English in the 8th grade is a year for
reinforcing and building grammar, broadening vocabulary and developing
discerning readers through literature. Grammar consists of another extensive
review of concepts learned and introduces several advanced skills. Vocabulary
quizzes are weekly, with the bulk of study occurring as homework. Literature
from the text deals with Christian character building themes.
Students have numerous in-class writing assignments
including poetry, short stories, book reports, and research. Lengthier writing
assignments are also assigned as homework.
Middle School students are encouraged to be lifelong
readers. This trait contributes to improved spelling and advanced writing
abilities. While there may not be homework every evening, each student is
encouraged to read on a regular basis.
Class supplies:
Besides the text, are paper, pencil and
pen. The student planner is an excellent tool to help teenagers improve their
organizational skills and increase their accountability. Lesson plans,
including any homework and upcoming tests are written on the board daily for
the student to copy into the planner and keep parents informed.
Christian Worldview:
The class is conducive to
the discussion of worldviews. Whether in agreement with or in opposition to a
biblical worldview, an author’s worldview is always communicated through what
he writes. The instructor wants to help each student discern what the author is
communicating through his writing
Grading:
English students are required to be active learners
and not expect the instructor to delineate the minutiae for exams. An online
grade book is kept, located at www.teacherease.com.
Students and parents are invited to access this site at any time. This
information is kept as current as possible and all report card grades are based
on the assignments noted there. Students are given a password for individual
access.
Conduct:
The school handbook describes acceptable classroom
behavior. The nature of the course includes participation through discussion,
so that is encouraged at the appropriate time.

school email krich@centralchristianschool.net.
It is a real calling to be involved in Christian education, and it is a
privilege to work with students to develop thinking and mature followers of
Christ.
