CENTRAL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – HUTCHINSON, KS
Course Title: Journalism
Instructor: Mrs. Kathryn Rich
School Year 2008-2009
Grade: 10, 11, 12
Credit Value: .5 per semester

Textbook: Online tutorials from Jostens Publishing

Introduction:

The publication of the school’s yearbook, The Open Door, is the main focus of this class.

Overview:

This class is an introductory course with more challenging course requirements for returning students. Class time covers photography, interviewing, advertisement sales, writing, and design elements. Class assignments require students to conduct interviews, photograph school events, and secure funding from advertisers. Staff roles include yearbook editor(s), photographers, reporters, and designers. Every staff member does some part of each role.

Supplies:

Most importantly, each student needs to bring a spirit of cooperation to class. With so many creative ideas being shared, it is imperative that the students make the daily choice to prefer others to self. This creates an atmosphere where there is freedom to share and discuss new ideas and also to offer help or suggestions. Students should also bring their steno pad, writing instrument, and any photo supplies that may be needed, particularly the school camera, photo card, and rechargeable batteries for the camera.

Christian Worldview:

Philippians 4:8 commands that believers think on specific things. Journalists at Central Christian High School provide appropriate material through the medium of journalism that is intended to stimulate and encourage the readership to godliness.

Grading.

An online grade book is kept, located at www.teacherease.com. Students and parents are invited to access this site at any time. This information is kept as current as possible and all report card grades are based on the assignments noted there. Students are given a password for individual access.

Conduct:

The school handbook describes acceptable classroom behavior. The nature of the course includes participation through discussion, so that is encouraged at the appropriate time.

Contact the instructor through the school office or school email krich@centralchristianschool.net. It is a real calling to be involved in Christian education, and it is a privilege to work with students to develop thinking and mature followers of Christ.
