CENTRAL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – HUTCHINSON, KS
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Instructor Name: Mrs. Marilyn Crouse
School Year: 2008-2009
Curriculum: A Beka/various supplemental materials
CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Bible – Bible lessons are taught daily from
God’s word, beginning with creation and going through the life of Christ. An alphabet of verses is memorized as
well as 3 small scripture passages. We drill daily on basic Bible doctrines (i.e. – Who is God? What
is sin?)
Reading/Phonics - Our reading program is phonics based. The children begin by learning the
sounds that vowels and consonants make. Vowels and their short sounds are introduced first. Each vowel has a picture card
associated with it to help students remember it. For example: “I says ‘i’ as in ‘Indian,’ i, i, i.” By the middle of the year we have
learned the entire alphabet and then we begin learning long vowel sounds. Reading one-vowel words is made easier
by learning blends (consonant plus vowel). From this point students are divided
into reading groups according to their reading level and we begin the A Beka
readers. Long vowel sounds are then learned. In the last months of the kindergarten year students learn
special sounds--combinations of letters that make sounds different from those
we are able to sound out.
The
reading books are supplemented with beginner readers published by Modern
Curriculum Press. The Book It!
Program is also used to encourage reading.
Number Skills – Students learn to
count and recognize the numbers 1-100. Addition is taught through the 10 family as well as beginning
subtraction concepts. Students
work with telling time and counting money (penny, nickel, dime and
quarter). We learn number words
1-10, counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and work with geometric shapes and
measurement.
Language Enrichment – We memorize a good
number of poems during the year and enjoy enhancing our language skills with
weekly Show and Tell.
Handwriting – We use the
Zaner/Bloser method. We learn to
correctly print each letter of the alphabet as we learn it in Phonics. After we have gone through all letters
we continue practicing daily and incorporating neat writing into all of our
work.
Social Studies – In this area we
cover units on community helpers, our nation, and countries around the
world. We also supplement this
with God’s World Magazine, which comes weekly and gives a Christian
perspective on happenings in our world.
Science – Science is covered in the last half
of the year. The units vary from
“God’s Plan for Me” to “God’s Plan for Weather” to “God’s Plan for the
Seashore.” (This names a few)
Art – We use A Beka’s art curriculum
book. It is filled with fun,
seasonal activities. The
instructor supplements this throughout the year with personally developed
projects.
PE, Music, and Library – Students leave the
classroom at various times throughout the week for these activities.
FOLDERS AND
HOMEWORK
Among other supplies that
are required, your child is to bring two plain color folders to school. One folder will be marked “Take
Home.” This will be sent home
everyday with graded papers and notes from the school or the teacher. It is to be checked and emptied
everyday. This is used as a form
of daily communication between the parents and teacher. A monthly class calendar will be
inserted on the left side marked “Return to School.” This calendar shows monthly birthdays, events, and show and
tell topics. It also is used as a
behavior record. A sticker means
that your child did not lose any tokens that day. A letter or note explains the lost token for the day
(explained in further detail on the behavior plan). Any notes you may send to the teacher should be put in the
folder. The right side of the
folder, “Keep at Home,” contains checked papers or announcements.
Homework
does not begin for kindergartners until we begin reading circles in November or
December. Homework is marked on
the books sent home, which are found in the folder. Unfinished papers will be marked, “Finish and Return.” These
should be completed as soon as possible.
BEHAVIOR PLAN
Growing Up in the Lord
Mrs. Crouse’s Behavior Plan
Kindergartners
have a lot to learn at this exciting stage in their lives. They are eager and anxious to learn and
also to please those around them. Even so, there are those selfish instincts that we need to watch
carefully and not allow to rule their lives. We need to work to turn their “ME-centeredness” to
“OTHER-centeredness.” Our mission
at Central Christian is to train every student to be complete in Christ. It’s a long process, but what a
wonderful opportunity you as parents have provided your child by sending them
here. We are an extension of your
family and church and I pray that as your child spends time in my classroom
she/he will see Christ more and more and desire to follow Him.
This sheet explains the
behavior plan used in the classroom.
Behavior
Goals for each child: Good
listener (red token)
Talks
only with permission (yellow token)
Seated
properly (orange token)
Respects
others/property (green token)
Obedient
(blue token)
Self-controlled
(purple token)
Each
child receives 2 tokens for each of the behavior areas. When an area is violated a token is
removed. At the end of the morning
students receive a sticker on their behavior sheet in their folder if they
haven’t lost any tokens. If they
lose a token I will initial the color of token lost on their sheet for that day
and also include a note as to why they lost it. If they lose both tokens in a day or week they lose recess
that day. At the end of the week
those with only one or no lost tokens are rewarded. We begin fresh each Monday with all tokens returned to their
charts.

Behavior Goals:
Each
child receives four links of different colors. A butterfly is attached to the
bottom link. The butterfly represents a warning. Once the butterfly is removed,
children will remove one link at a time for misbehavior. With each link that is
removed, 5 minutes is taken from their recess. If the last link has to be
removed, parents are notified of the child’s behavior. At the end of the week,
those who have lost no links will receive a reward.
