Textbook: Geometry (for Christian Schools) – Bob Jones University

Course Objective:

This course is designed to build upon geometric concepts introduced in previous math classes and introduce new advanced geometric concepts while at the same time the student will develop both critical thinking and problem solving skills. Speed and accuracy are encouraged (where accuracy is more important).

Goals:

By the end of this course students should have a good concept of the following topics: sets and subsets, definitions, postulates, and theorems, subsets of lines, planes, and space, segments and measurement, constructions, angles and measurements, deductive reasoning, preparing for proofs, congruent segments, angles, triangles, parallel lines, triangles and quadrilaterals, area, circles, space, volume, transformations and symmetry, similarity, trigonometry.

Christian Worldview:

Bible verses are incorporated and discussed within the curriculum and verses that relate to Biblical Mathematics and “math concepts and numbers” are also discussed with students. The use of God’s Word, wisdom, and discernment through the help of the Holy Spirit is discussed when examining current and future critical thinking and problem solving skills. The Bible exhorts us to “Come, let us reason together.”

Grading:

Each section (or chapter) has a section or chapter test that makes up 67% of the student’s grade for each quarter. Homework makes up 33% of their grade for each quarter. Each quarter makes up 42.5% of their semester grade (85% for both quarters) and the semester final exam makes up 15% of the semester grade.

Homework:

Homework is assigned daily and is worth 10 points. Students earn a percentage grade for each assignment. Students can earn up to 5 percentage points (in class) for correcting homework problems that were done incorrectly. Homework is due two class days after it is assigned. This allows the student (particularly if involved in outside activities) the opportunity to ask questions the next day in class and complete homework on time. Students who turn in late or incomplete homework will lose 20% on that particular homework assignment and an additional 10% for each day thereafter.

Expectations:

Students are expected to come to class ready to work and ready to learn and to behave in a way that provides for themselves and others a positive environment for learning and working. Calculators will be used when necessary. Students are expected to ask for help outside of class during the times allotted during the school day.

Rules/Regulations:

Behavioral issues (including excessive talking and/or being disruptive in class) will be dealt with in the following order: 1st time – talk to the student, 2nd time – send a note home to be signed by a parent, 3rd time – contact parents. All other school rules and regulations apply.

Materials/Supplies: Paper, sharpened pencils, ruler, compass, protractor, scientific calculator, graphing paper.
