School Year: 2008-2009
Grade:  10
Credit Value  .5 per semester

Textbook: Biology for Christian Schools, Bob Jones University Press

Description: An introductory study of life and the processes of life with an emphasis on laboratory exercises.

Topics Covered:

God & Science Scientific Method  Human Anatomy & Physiology: Digestive, Respiratory,
Evolution vs. Creation Chemistry of Life  Integumentary, Skeletal, Muscular, Circulatory, Lymphatic
Genetics Cytology Excretory, Nervous, Endocrine, and Reproductive Systems
Fetal Pig Dissection Biotechnology

Worldview:

Current technology in science is discussed and studied to help students understand current events in those areas and the appropriate Christian response. We also spend an extensive chapter on evolution and creation. It is not only important that students disagree with evolution, but that they understand why they disagree, and start to develop a personal apologetic against evolution.

Grading:

Students will complete reading assignments, review questions, laboratory exercises and tests. They will be graded on classroom participation, reading quizzes, homework assignments (including laboratory analysis), and tests. Each assignment is given a point value and each student will receive a certain number of points out of the total number possible. Late work: 1 day late = 80%, 2 days late = 70%, 3 days late = no credit

Expectations:

To succeed in biology students must prepare for class by reading the assigned reading, completing the homework on time, and studying in preparation for exams. Homework is due at the beginning of class of the day due.

Book Critique:

Students are also expected to complete one book critique by selecting a book from the approved reading list. Parents are encouraged to assist students in their selection of reading material. Due Date: December 12

Second semester, student will research and read articles on the different body systems. Each systems reading is due at the time of the test on that system.

Plan Ahead:

On a whiteboard in my classroom I keep a list of all assignments for the current week. It also indicates any tests coming up the following week. Students should take note of this information at the beginning of the week so that they can plan according to the activities they have. This should allow plenty of test preparation time, as often the students know about tests more than a week before they occur.

Teacher Ease:

Student grades are recorded and updated on a secure Internet website (www.teacherease.com). Students and parents can access this information at any time to check the progress of the student. I also use this information to communicate with parents about missing or incomplete assignments. Contact me if you are not currently set up to access the website or if you have any questions.

Supplies:

Students will need at least a two-inch 3 ring binder that is used solely for this class. They will also need pencils, notebook paper, and five dividers for their binder. A scientific calculator could be helpful, but is not required.
