CENTRAL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL – HUTCHINSON, KS
Title of Course: Physical Science
Instructor: Nancy Whiteman
School Year:  2008-2009
Grade: 12
Credit Value: .5 per semester
Prerequisites:            Algebra II
Textbook: Physical Science, McGraw-Hill (Glencoe)

Description:

A college preparatory class dealing with the interactions of matter from the atomic level to the planetary level and a brief overview of modern physics with an emphasis on hands on laboratory exercises.

Topics Covered:

Science & the Christian   Newton’s Laws Thermodynamics Light & Reflection
Scientific Method  Work & Energy  Fluids Refraction
Measurement   Momentum Electricity Wave Optics
Kinematics & Motion Periodic Motion Electrodynamics  Relativity
Vectors & Scalars  Matter  Magnetism Nuclear Physics
Dynamics Heat & Energy Electromagnetism Quantum Physics
Circular Motion

Worldview:

Physics is taught upon the basic principles of creation by God. The fact that the world conforms to the physical laws established by God is addressed many times in this course. Many physics concepts are also related to the Christian life.

Grading:

Students will complete reading assignments, review questions, laboratory exercises and tests. They will be graded on classroom participation, reading quizzes, homework assignments (including laboratory analysis), and tests. Each assignment is given a point value and each student will receive a certain number of points out of the total number possible. Late work: 1 day late = 80%, 2 days late = 70%, 3 days late = no credit

Expectations:

To succeed in Physics students must prepare for class by reading the assigned reading, completing the homework on time, and studying in preparation for exams.

Book Critique:

Students are also expected to complete two book critiques by selecting a book from the approved reading list. Parents are encouraged to assist students in their selection of reading material. Due Date: December 12 & May 4

Plan Ahead:

On a whiteboard in my classroom I keep a list of all assignments for the current week. It also indicates any tests coming up the following week. Students should take note of this information at the beginning of the week so that they can plan according to the activities they have. This should allow plenty of test preparation time as many times the students know about tests over a week before they occur.

Teacher Ease:

Student grades are recorded and updated on a secure Internet website (www.teacherease.com). Students and parents can access this information at any time to check the progress of the student. I also use this information to communicate with parents about missing or incomplete assignments. Contact me if you are not currently set up to access the website or if you have any questions.

Supplies:

Students will need at least a two-inch 3 ring binder that is used solely for this class. They will also need pencils, notebook paper, five dividers for their binder, and a scientific calculator.
